International conference to commemorate 90th anniversary of the National Audit Office of Lithuania

The National Audit Office of Lithuania established on 16 January 1919 commemorates its 90th anniversary. To mark this occasion an international conference Public Audit: Helping to Manage State Property Wisely will be organized in the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania on 29 January. The event will present officers from Lithuanian and European Union institutions and states sharing their experiences and insights on public audit, parliamentary control, as well as perspectives of the European Union Budget and accountability.

The Auditor General Mrs Rasa Budbergytė says that "Today the National Audit Office of Lithuania is a modern institution which has introduced the most progressive practice and standards of the Supreme Audit Institutions. However, in order to achieve the main aim raised for us - to help the Lithuanian nation manage its property wisely - we need to continuously develop and grow".


The international conference presentations will be made by the Member of the European Commission Dr. Dalia Grybauskaitė, the Chairman of the Budget Control Committee of the European Parliament Mr Herbert Bösch, the President of the European Court of Auditors Mr Vitor Manuel da Silva Caldeira, the Chairman of the Seimas Audit Committee Mrs Loreta Graužinienė, the President of the Netherlands Court of Audit Mrs Saskia J. Stuiveling, the former President of Lithuanian Constitutional Court Prof. Dr. Egidijus Kūris, as well as the Auditor General Mrs Rasa Budbergytė.

On 16 January 1919, following the decision of the State Council of Lithuania Mr Kostas Daugirdas who had financial education was appointed the first head of the National Audit Office of Lithuania. The National Audit Office of Lithuania was assigned to supervise the State revenue and expenditure, property, debts, and financial accounts. Until 1940 when the National Audit Office of Lithuania was closed and after the restoration of independence the office has been held by 12 Auditors General.
