Lithuania nominates the Auditor General Ms Rasa Budbergytë for membership of the European Court of Auditors

Following the Lithuanian Parliament (Seimas) assent to a proposal to nominate the Auditor General Ms Rasa Budbergytë for membership of the European Court of Auditors (ECA), the Government today adopted a resolution concerning nomination of Ms Budbergytë candidacy to the ECA members. Given the Council of the European Union approves of the candidacy of Ms Budbergytë, she will start in her new position as a member of the ECA by the beginning of May next year.

Ms Budbergytë said that this nomination is the recognition of the work results of the National Audit Office during the last five years. „I  value  and  appreciate  the  trust  the State Heads and

politicians have placed on me to represent Lithuania in one of the main institutions of the European Union. This assent shows that the National Audit Office’s input into the effective management of the state finance and property is visible and valued. It would not have been possible to achieve those results without dedicated work of all our staff at the National Audit Office”, said the Auditor General.

Ms Budbergytë pointed out the areas of activity to which she is going to give most attention when working at the European Court of Auditors. “My personal experience allows me to tell that in the European Court of Auditors it would be necessary to simplify internal administrative procedures, to increase the audit impact and to strengthen the Court’s relations with national supreme audit institutions”, said Ms Budbergytë. “When working at the Court of Auditors I will continue my close co-operation with the Seimas, the Government and other institutions, certainly with the National Audit Office by taking efforts to inform them about the newest developments in the EU management and audit that could be adapted here in Lithuania as well”.

The European Court of Auditors carries out audits, through which it assesses the collection and spending of EU funds. It examines whether financial operations have been properly recorded and disclosed, legally and regularly executed and managed so as to ensure economy, efficiency and effectiveness. The Court of Auditors helps the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union and the Member States to ensure sound financial management of the EU budget.

Appointments of the members of the European Court of Auditors upon proposals by the Member States are made by the Council of the European Union after consultation with the European Parliament for a term of six years.
