United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution on SAI Independence

“SAIs can accomplish their tasks objectively and effectively only if they are independent of the audited entity and are protected against outside influence” - expressly recognized United Nations General Assembly in its resolution adopted in the end of December 2011.

According to the Auditor General Ms Giedrė Švedienė this resolution officially recognises united efforts of SAIs of different countries devoted to strengthening their independence and to achieving general recognition of the INTOSAI Mexico and Lima Declarations.


By this General Assembly Resolution member states of the United Nations recognised the importance of the role of SAIs in promoting the efficiency, accountability, effectiveness and transparency of public administration as well as the internationally agreed development goals including capacity building.

„I am especially delighted that there is global understanding of how important is for supreme audit institutions to be independent in implementing their tasks“, noted Giedrė Švedienė.
