17/10/2019   Audit reports of the European Court of Auditors presented to the National Audit Office

Today, Rimantas Šadžius, Member of the European Court of Auditors (ECA), visited the National Audit Office where he presented the ECA Annual report on the implementation of the EU budget concerning the financial year 2018.

The ECA has concluded that the EU accounts present a true and fair view of the EU’s financial position. For the third consecutive year, the auditors have issued a qualified opinion on the regularity of financial transactions. This means that a significant part of the EU expenditure in 2018 was not materially affected by errors and that such errors are no longer prevalent in all spending areas. However, the auditors say there are still challenges in high-risk spending areas such as rural development and cohesion.

The ECA highlights challenges to EU budgetary and financial management, which are crucial to the new long-term budget cycle. The absorption of the structural and investment funds by Member States, which account for almost half of the current multiannual financial framework, is still low despite accelerations and a significant increase in the number of claims in 2018.

During his visit to the National Audit Office, ECA Member Šadžius presented the results of the performance audits (Special Reports) and shared his knowledge of the ECA's planned directions for next year.

The ECA is the independent external audit body for EU finances, helping to improve EU financial management and acting as an independent guardian of the financial interests of EU citizens. National Audit Office works closely with the ECA sharing professional knowledge with them.
